Discogenic Pain

Updated: Aug 18, 2024

Discogenic pain (DBP) is a type of back pain caused by issues with the spine's discs. It can be caused by a number of factors, including:

Degeneration

As people age or experience trauma, the discs in their spine can break down and become less effective at cushioning the spine. This can lead to structural defects that cause inflammation and biomechanical instability.

Nerve irritation

Degenerated discs can cause nerves to grow deeper into the disc, where they can irritate nerve receptors and produce cytokines that cause pain. Inflammatory chemicals from an annular tear can also reach these nerves and cause pain.

Dr Chris Hopkins at Hopkins Health specializes in helping people that suffer with Discogenic Pain. Dr Hopkins serves Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island and surrounding areas.
